Service of process is the procedure of officially delivering legal papers or court documents to parties, witnesses or other people involved in a case.

Officially serving legal papers is necessary to start a legal action by giving the other parties formal notice that there is a lawsuit or pending legal action filed against them. Without official service legal cases cannot proceed through the court system. Each state has guidelines for the process server to report to the courts upon the completion of the service. This is to ensure the judge will know the service has been completed according to that state’s laws. Process servers are not limited to serving notifications of lawsuits they are also used to serve subpoenas, foreclosure and other legal notifications.
